WP1 – System Analysis and Optimization
This work package contains the system modeling and analysis activities aimed at the optimization of the test systems. It comprises PET-specific and MR-specific topics to establish a profound understanding of both systems as well as of the interactions between them. Simulations of PET system performance based on Monte Carlo methods are necessary to optimize the preclinical and human systems as a function of all relevant design parameters, including the scintillator material, crystal geometry, optical coupling, light sensor layout, read-out electronics, signal digitization processing method, and system geometry. The results will be necessary to optimize the PET detector realized in WP2, WP3, and WP4. Furthermore, the RF behavior of the PET modules and the components within the MR system will be modeled. The influence of eddy currents on the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) and MR image distortion will be analyzed to find optimum geometries for coplanar PET/MR imaging. This knowledge will be essential for the calibration and integration of the PET detector within the MR.
